Summary of the Story The Three-Body Problem written  by Liu Cixin

During the peak of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, Ye Wenjie, a college student feels as though everything is falling apart around her. Her mother, Shao Lin, was one of the torturers who killed her father, Ye Zhetai, an academic physics professor, for his supposed anti-Communist views. Ye Wenjie is taken to a work camp in Mongolia a few years later, where she is forced to chop trees all day. Ye sees that the natural environment on Earth is being gradually destroyed by mankind when she makes friends with reporter Bai Mulin. Ye offers to write Bai’s letter to the Chinese government, asking them to slow down the pace of deforestation. Bai wants to compose the letter. But the letter backfires, irritating officials, and terrified Bai frames Ye.

The narrative jumps forty years. Expert in a novel technology called nanomaterial, Wang Miao received a request to become a member of the Frontiers of Science, a closed society. Wang receives an invitation to China’s Battle Command Centre shortly after. He was startled to hear that every country in the globe is working together to thwart an external attack. The danger’s nature is still unknown. It may have something to do with the  suicides among researchers. Wang approves to work as a spy for the Frontiers after being pushed by an unpleasant policeman named Shi Qiang and after finding out that a reputable physicist named Yang Dong killed himself.

Earth prepares for the approaching Trisolaran arrival as the truth comes to light. The Trisolarans plan to use cunning methods to prevent human scientific advancement, inciting hopelessness among Earth’s protectors. But Wang becomes strong after hearing Shi compare locusts to humans surviving attacks, and he decides to continue fighting against the coming disaster.

Chapter 1: Turmoil and Recruitment

Meet Ye Wenjie, a young woman experiencing the Cultural Revolution in China. When her mom flows into things she can’t control and her dad, a science teacher, is taken away, her world falls apart. Ye is unexpectedly chosen to operate at a covert location known as Red Coast. It’s an odd and strange military location. Though confused, she wants to know why they choose her. She’s only now begun to learn about the strange activities going on at Red Coast.

Ye experiences a mixture of interest and nervousness as she enters this new environment at Red Coast. She’s not sure what her function will be there because the place is cloaked in darkness. In an atmosphere of the unfamiliar, Yang Weining, a scientist related to her father, provides some familiarity. Ye takes the risk because she has nothing to lose and is expecting to escape the punishment that will be expected of her for her involvement in the letter incident. She accepts this offer with a mixture of relief. It is concerning because she knows it’s a one-way ticket to an unknown planet. The Red Coast serves as both her haven and her prison, a place where secrets lurk behind every corner.

Ye’s unsure first steps into this covert existence at Red Coast mark the chapter’s conclusion. Walking onto this isolated army station will be a journey she never imagined, one that is full of unknown uncertainty, with the weight of her past following her everywhere.

Ye experiences a wide range of emotions as she gets used to her new existence at Red Coast. She struggles with mixed emotions of relief at not being immediately punished and fear for the future she might have within these strange walls amidst the mystery and strangeness of the base. She is fascinated by the unresolved questions that surround her but also concerned as she delves deeper into Red Coast and more answers come to light.

Chapter 2: Wang’s Invitation

Introducing Wang Miao, a scientist making his way through today’s world. Despite his dedication to his career, he gets entangled in an unclear situation. Curious as well as confused, Wang receives an unexpected offer to become a member of a group known as the Frontiers of Science. This is not your typical invitation. Wang is confused by his comrades’ sudden suicides, a worrying tendency he can’t fully understand. His scientific world was shadowed by these happenings, which left him uneasy and in search of explanations.

In the midst of this interesting invitation, Wang is called to the Battle Command Centre in China. He’s been taken by surprise on an entirely new level here.  Wang knows he’s stepped into something far bigger and more complex than he ever could have expected, and his world swirls as he struggles to process the truth of this discovery.

This chapter explores Wang’s confusion and growing worry. The invitation and the puzzles surrounding the unrest in the scientific community begin to interconnect, preparing Wang for his journey into a complex web of confusion and hanging danger.

The invitation to the Limits of Science takes on an exciting importance as Wang makes his way through this confusing unfamiliar environment. It turns into an entry point to a universe he never imagined, exposing mystery and unresolved issues that prick his moral instinct and scientific curiosity. He struggles with a sense of duty and is driven to learn the truth about the suicides that seem to have something to do to the global threat that faces humanity.

Wang is left with a difficult decision in the midst of the chaos and growing conflicts. Once an exciting future, the invitation now seems like a small piece in a darker, far wider picture. Wang’s feeling of duty drives him onward as he travels deeper into this complex world, encouraging him to take an active role in solving the mysteries that face both the scientific community and society at large, instead of just staying an observer.

Chapter 3: The Enigmatic Game

Wang explores the maze of questions in more depth in an effort to find answers that the scientific community is unable to provide. While he considers the disturbing events, he immerses himself in the absorbing universe of the virtual reality game “Three-Body.” The game depicts a troubled planet called Trisolaris and offers an unsettling and compelling simulation. Wang is captivated by the deep complexity of this game, in which the jumbled movements of the sun mirror the disorder of a world on the verge of a disaster.

Through the virtual world of “Three-Body,” Wang finds a mirror of Trisolaris’s problems. He finds the game’s representation of a planet under attack from universal movement to be intriguing and he believes that solving its puzzles could provide the answers to understanding the dangers that Earth faces in the near future.

This chapter explores Wang’s involvement in the game, showing his increasing interest and awareness that “Three-Body” may provide important hints related to imminent dangers to humanity. Wang’s search for answers grows as he makes his way through the simulated unrest, leading him further into an environment where simulation and reality blend together in confusing manners.

As Wang explores the immersive world of “Three-Body,” he becomes more and more interested in the game’s minute complexities and the connections it makes to the imaginary planet Trisolaris’ problems. The wild movements of the virtual suns and the chaos they cause mirror the disaster that is supposed to be coming in the real world. Wang grows more and more certain that learning the mechanics of this virtual universe may have major implications for understanding the coming doom that affects Earth.

Chapter 4: Unraveling Trisolaris

Wang continues his journey in the virtual world of “Three-Body” in this chapter. He starts to understand the odd complexities of Trisolaris, the planet that the simulation mirrors, as he digs more into the game’s complexities. Wang discovers the terrible hardships of a world blighted by the unforeseen movements of three suns through the game’s simulations. The virtual disorder reflects the dire circumstance of a planet whose unstable star system is an ongoing cause of threat to its destruction.

Wang’s findings in “Three-Body” show the huge challenges that Trisolaris experiences, including the sun’s irregular activity that falls the planet into cycles of extreme heat and continuous darkness. These insights connect the intricacies of the game to the approaching disaster affecting Earth, therefore increasing Wang’s awareness of the approaching danger.

The stark similarities between the irregular celestial movements in “Three-Body,” the virtual world of Trisolaris, and the imminent dangers to Earth’s integrity become more and more evident as Wang explores it. Every discovery made throughout the simulation is a scary mirror of the approaching famine that humanity faces, leading Wang farther into a search for knowledge that might provide the solution to avoiding disaster. Wang is more determined than ever to solve the secret unknown before it’s too late because of the complicated connections that exist between the present-day dangers and the game’s picture of world disorder.
