Unhei looked out her family’s new window as the sun rose high above the small village. Everything seemed off; the houses had an odd appearance, the people spoke a language she wasn’t familiar with, and the air had a peculiar fragrance. For her family, this was the country of new beginnings—America. In search of better prospects, Unhei’s parents made the decision to relocate to America. While they hoped for a better future, Unhei had to say goodbye to everything she had ever known.

As they drove through the town, Unhei were overcome with surprise by the sights all around her. While motor vehicles rushed by on the roads and enormous buildings towered above them, people of different types and hues went about their daily tasks. The calm streets of her native Korea were nowhere like all of this. Finally, they arrived at their new residence—a modest, neat house with a neat lawn and a cosy interior. Unhei’s feeling of being a stranger in an unknown land lingered despite her parents’ best attempts to help her overcome it. The next day, Unhei’s parents dropped her off at her new school.

Unhei’s eyes grew wide at the sight of so many new faces as they entered the classroom. Unhei felt as though everyone was staring at her even though the teacher welcomed her to the class with a kind grin. She made an attempt to grin back, but her anxiety overcame her. Unhei found it difficult to follow the lessons and interact with her peers during the day. She yearned for the comforts of her former school and companions, feeling alone and alone. Being the new kid was difficult, especially when everything seemed so strange.

In the middle of her classmates’ laughing and talking, Unhei was seated by herself at a lunch table and felt a little lost. She yearned to join them in their friendship as she observed them exchanging sandwiches and telling stories Unhei’s teacher matched her up with Sarah, a student, for a group assignment after lunch. Unhei was hesitant at first, but she soon found herself opening up to Sarah and telling her tales of her upbringing in Korea and her voyage to the United States. It was satisfying to establish a connection and close the distance.

At the end of the school day, Unhei thought about her fresh start. It was intimidating and full of unknowns, for sure, but it was also full of opportunities. Unhei entered the school prepared to begin this journey of self-discovery and belonging, filled with a fresh sense of hope and resolve.

Chapter 2: The Name Jar

As Unhei settled into her new school, she couldn’t shake off the feeling of being different. Each day presented new challenges, from navigating the cafeteria menu to deciphering the fast-paced conversations around her. Yet amidst the whirlwind of change, one question lingered in her mind: should she keep her Korean name, or adopt an American one to fit in better?

One afternoon, as Unhei sat pondering this dilemma, her classmate Joey approached her with a curious object—a jar filled with colorful slips of paper. “It’s the name jar!” Joey exclaimed, his eyes sparkling with excitement. “Whenever someone new joins our class, we all suggest names for them to choose from.” Unhei’s heart fluttered with anticipation as she peered into the jar, each slip of paper bearing a different name—some familiar, others completely foreign to her ears.

As the days passed, Unhei found herself drawn back to the name jar, each visit sparking a new wave of contemplation. She listened intently as her classmates debated the merits of various names—some were chosen for their uniqueness, others for their familiarity. One day, during recess, Unhei found herself sharing her innermost thoughts with her new friend Sarah. Unhei took the lessons she had learnt from the name jar with her to America, where she found true acceptance in staying true to herself and cherishing her individuality rather than trying to change it. 

Chapter 3: Daisy, Miranda, Lex…

As Unhei continued her journey of self-discovery as she found herself surrounded by well-meaning classmates eager to help her assimilate into American culture. Each day brought new suggestions for potential names, as her peers brainstormed ways to make her feel more at home. “Daisy,” one classmate suggested, with a smile. “It’s pretty and easy to remember.” “Miranda,” another chimed in, nodding enthusiastically. “It’s elegant and sophisticated.” “Lex,” offered yet another, with a grin. “Short and sweet, just like you!” Unhei listened politely to each suggestion, her mind swirling with thoughts. While she appreciated her classmates’ efforts to include her, none of the names quite felt right. They were like ill-fitting clothes—nice enough, but not quite her size.

Despite her reservations, Unhei couldn’t help but feel a twinge of doubt. Maybe she was being too stubborn, too attached to her old identity. After all, wasn’t it easier to blend in, to become just like everyone else? She was still the same Unhei, with her own unique personality, quirks, and dreams. 

One afternoon, during recess, Unhei found herself sitting under a tree with Sarah, discussing the latest suggestions from the name jar. What do you think that she asked from her voice tinged with uncertainty. Sarah smiled gently, her eyes filled with understanding. “It’s okay to be unsure,” she reassured Unhei. But remember  your name is a part of your identity.

Unhei nodded, grateful for Sarah’s wisdom. She realized that her name was more than just a label—it was a reflection of her heritage and  her family and the journey that had brought her to this new land. With renewed determination, Unhei made a decision. She would embrace Korean names with pride and she would show the world that being different was something to be celebrated, not ashamed of.

Unhei’s will to maintain her Korean identity grew stronger every day. To make a change, she was hesitant to erase a part of herself. Over her time in school, Unhei went through periods of uncertainty and anxiety. Some students questioned her decision, unable to fathom why she wouldn’t want to fit in. But Unhei never wavered in her conviction because she knew that her name was a source of strength rather than weakness. Their tenacity encouraged Unhei to preserve his culture and customs as they had done so in the face of hardship. Unhei became increasingly assured of her choice with every proposed name that was turned down. Unhei was aware that her own identity could never be written down on a piece of paper, no matter how alluring the names in the jar were. Unhei was who she was.

Even though she made an attempt to maintain her Korean identity, there were times when she felt lost among a sea of strange people and traditions. Unhei struggled to find her place in this new environment, and every day seemed to melt into the next. She observed her friends laughing and playing, their discussions flowing naturally in a language she was still learning, and she felt like an alien.

Unhei frequently struggled to keep up with the lessons in the classroom. The directions given by the teacher sounded like a mix of strange noises, and the words written on the chalkboard appeared to blend together. Unhei would watch her friends laugh and talk while eating lunch alone at a corner table, her tray of food unfinished. She wanted to participate, but the idea of approaching them made her nervous. What if they turned her down? What if her attempts to blend in or her accent made them laugh?

Unhei’s feeling of loneliness seemed to get stronger as the days stretched into weeks. Everything felt unfamiliar and weird here, in this new place. Unhei had a sense of loneliness one afternoon while she was walking home from school. Her eyes filled with tears , she realized how much she missed her previous existence. She missed her favorite spots to explore, her teachers, and her friends. She missed having a sense of identity.

However a sliver of hope might be seen through the darkness. As Unhei dried away her tears, she saw that she wasn’t really alone. She had her family, who loved her without question. Sarah had become a sincere confidante and friend. She had herself above all, a tough, resilient lady determined to find her way in this foreign world. With a renewed sense of will, Unhei brushed away her tears and started home. She understood that her feeling of being lost was merely a temporary barrier, a diversion on her path to learning who she was.

Chapter 5: Embracing Differences

Unhei started to see the beauty in accepting differences as she worked through the difficulties of feeling lost and alone. She realized that diversity was something to be appreciated rather than something to be afraid of. Unhei found her voice one day in a class debate about ethnic diversity. She talked passionately about her upbringing in Korea, highlighting the country’s vibrant festivals, delectable cuisine, and deeply ingrained customs. Inspired by the encouraging reply, Unhei set out to investigate the cultural disparities in her immediate surroundings with a receptive mindset. Unhei learned that although her pupils came from different origins, they all had similar aspirations, concerns, and desires. Through the exchange of stories, Unhei and her classmates forged deeper connections and a greater appreciation for one another’s backgrounds. They discovered that despite their differences, they shared common hopes, dreams and aspirations.

One day, during a particularly lively storytelling session, Unhei had an idea. “Why don’t we start a storytelling club?” she suggested, her eyes bright with enthusiasm. “We can take turns sharing stories from our own cultures and traditions.” Her classmates cheered in agreement, thrilled at the prospect of coming together to celebrate diversity through the art of storytelling. They spent hours brainstorming ideas for the club, excited to create a space where everyone’s voice could be heard and valued.

As the first meeting of the storytelling club approached, Unhei felt a sense of pride and anticipation. She knew that sharing stories had the power to build bridges between cultures and foster a sense of belonging for all who participated. And as the club gathered around a circle of eager listeners, Unhei took her place at the center, ready to embark on a new chapter of discovery and connection through the sharing of stories.

Chapter 7: Finding Courage

Unhei encountered situations in her school’s busy hallways that put her bravery to the test. She understood that bravery was necessary to get over her concerns, whether it was speaking up for herself and  negotiating the difficulties of being a newbie, or even just standing up for herself. Unhei’s acceptance to take part in a school talent event was one of her biggest bravery tests. She was first scared by the thought and  the last thing she wanted to do was stand on stage by herself with all eyes on her. However, she was inspired as she saw her peers practice their performances with passion.

Unhei took a deep breath, summoned her courage, and made the brave decision to show off her own gift—traditional Korean dancing. She had acquired the exquisite dance routine from her grandmother, which showcased the splendor of her cultural heritage. Unhei’s stomach was churning with a mixture of nerves and excitement as the day of the talent event drew near.  She became more assured of her skills with every practice session, directing her anxiety into determined focus. At last, the time came. Unhei entered the stage with confidence and elegance as the curtains opened and she was highlighted by the limelight. As she moved, the music swung about her, following her heritage.

The auditorium erupted in wild applause when the concluding notes of the music were played. Unhei gazed out at the sea of happy faces in front of her and felt her heart leap with excitement. She understood then that bravery meant accepting who she was and letting the world see her abilities, not only facing her anxieties. However, Unhei’s quest for bravery didn’t finish there. She persisted in pushing herself beyond her comfort zone in the ensuing weeks and months, whether it was by joining clubs, taking on new challenges, or speaking up in class. By facing her worries head-on and refusing to let them stop her, Unhei showed her students that courage was more than just being fearless. She was also beginning to show signs of bravery,  commitment to the future and prepared to take on any obstacles that might arise.

Chapter 8: Standing Tall

Unhei learned the value of towering above the ground in her new school’s ever-changing surroundings, both literally and figuratively. She discovered that resilience and self-confidence were crucial for conquering challenges and realizing her aspirations as she made her way through the highs and lows of adolescence. A disagreement with a student who questioned Unhei’s decision to maintain her Korean name taught her one of her earliest lessons in self-assurance. Unhei initially experienced a wave of uncertainty and insecurity, not knowing how to react.

Unhei calmly and resolutely explained the meaning of her name and her decision to maintain it. She invited her classmate to explore the world through her eyes as she told tales about her family and cultural background. Even though the talk was challenging, Unhei came away from it feeling more confident and strong than before. But being strong meant more than just facing people; it meant having confidence in oneself. Unhei experienced periods of insecurity and self-doubt as she followed her hobbies and passions. She had to tell herself that she was deserving of success whenever she applied for a leadership role or made an audition for a school play.

Each defeat Unhei faced taught her the importance of resilience and determination. She learned how to see setbacks as chances to experience growth rather than roadblocks to success. When she adopted a resilient mindset, she also realized that she was far more capable than she had ever assumed. However, being tall is essential supporting others along the way alongside attaining personal achievement. Unhei matured into a person who surrounded herself with her friends, encouraging them in their goals and celebrating their victories as if they were her own.

One day while she was walking through the school hallways, Unhei recognised how much she had changed since showing up to the United States. Instead, she projected pride in her accomplishments and her heritage, bearing it all with a high head. As Unhei looked to the future, she recognised that growing up will always be a guiding principle in her life. Whenever she faced challenges or followed her goals, she made a point of being strong, resilient, and really herself. And she knew that nothing was out of her reach when she thought about the way.

Chapter 9: A Sense of Belonging

Unhei started to feel a strong feeling of belonging as she proceeded to bargain the ups and downs of her new life in America. An important turning point in Unhei’s quest for acceptance occurred at a school-wide cultural fair. Every classroom was converted into a cultural exhibition, where professors and students shared tales, customs, and delicacies from all around the world.

Unhei felt pride welling up inside her as she strolled past the vibrant exhibits. She saw the richness of diversity celebrated in all its forms among her colleagues and classmates here. She ate food from exotic places, gawked at traditional attire and artifacts, and paid close attention while her classmates related tales from their own cultures. Unhei’s sense of belonging was, however, cultivated not only by the cultural fair but also by the regular opportunities for interaction and companionship that she had with her classmates. There were food booths with a tempting array of international cuisines, as well as cultural exhibitions where visitors could learn about different countries and traditions.
